Background and History
Sikhism was founded in the 15th century by Guru Nanak. The religion was born in the Punjab region of South Asia, near present-day India. 9 fellow gurus followed Nanak and began the Sikhism religion. Sikhism was distinctly different from Hinduism and Islam, the main religions in the area at the current time. The 5th guru, Guru Arjan, completed establishing Arimstar, the site of the holiest Sikh temple. Arjan also created the first authorized book of Sikh scripture.
